LI President calls for real pressure on Iran

Hans van Baalen MEP, President of Liberal International, sent a clear message to Iran, following last week's imposition of EU oil and financial embargo and a consequent resolution in the European Parliament: 'I feel that this resolution is the first step to put real pressure on Iran. I am hopeful that it will succeed but should diplomatic efforts fail, then additional measures must be considered alongside the oil embargo.'

Few days earlier German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle (FDP, LI full member) in Washington D.C. met with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and commented: “I think it is important for all of us to see that a nuclear option is not acceptable of Iran. And this is not only our raison d'etre, to protect Israel. It is also a question of the balance in the region, and it's also unacceptable if we look to the situation and the non-proliferation necessity worldwide”. Addressing the worsening situation in Syria, where Iran is heavily involved, Mr. Westerwelle was determined: “The regime of President Assad must be stopped urgently.”
