A senior EU official has expressed hope that free trade talks with Japan will bear fruit in the not-too-distant future.
Hans van Baalen is heading a delegation from the European Parliament and spoke to NHK in Tokyo. He said free trade is good for both Japan and the EU, and that more trade will probably help the region out of its economic crisis. He said he expects trade talks with Japan to produce a result within one or two years.
The delegates are meeting with Japanese lawmakers to discuss the planned partnership. Van Baalen indicated that talks toward an EPA are likely to begin in March.
