LI President Hans van Baalen MEP and ALDE Party President Sir Graham Watson MEP met Burmese freedom fighter, current MP and laureate of the LI Freedom Prize 1995 Aung San Suu Kyi in the European Parliament in Strasbourg where she was presented the 1990 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought. Then LI President Lord David Steel of Aikwood was not able to present her the LI Prize for Freedom in person because she was not allowed to leave Burma and Lord Steel was not allowed in.
Aung San Suu Syi said that she hoped to be able to attend one of LI´s Executives or Congresses to receive the LI Prize for Freedom in person. Van Baalen invited her to attend the 59th LI Congress in Rotterdam 24 - 27 of April 2014.
