Van Baalen (VVD): Europees Unitair Links moet zich niet met Zwarte Piet bemoeien - Hoofdinhoud

Hans van Baalen, leider van de VVD in het Europees Parlement, vindt dat de fractie Europees Unitair Links (GUE/NGL) zich belachelijk maakt door een discussie in het EP te organiseren over Zwarte Piet. Sinterklaas en Zwarte Piet zijn Nederlands cultureel erfgoed, waar het EP niets mee van doen heeft. Dat het EP-lid Malin Björk hiermee een politiek-correct punt wil scoren, geeft aan hoe diep Europees Unitair Links is gezonken. Van Baalen vraagt de Nederlandse SP-delegatie en de delegatie van de Partij voor de Dieren, die deel uitmaken van deze fractie, afstand te nemen van deze bespottelijke en ongepaste actie.

MEP Malin Björk (GUE/NGL, Sweden), in collaboration with the European Network Against Racism (ENAR), invites you to a discussion entitled "Afrophobic stereotypes vs tradition: the case of the Zwarte Piet in the Netherlands". This event will take place at the European Parliament in Strasbourg on 16th December 2014, from 17:00 to 18:00, in room S3.7.

This debate, which will gather Black-led organisations from across Europe, generalist anti-racist organisations and MEPs, aims at discussing blackfacing and its impact on People of African Descent and Black Europeans and at bringing evidence on the existence of a specific form of racism called Afrophobia, that specifically targets Black people in Europe. As you may know, the ‘Zwarte Piet’ figure, a traditional blackfaced character, perpetuates colonial stereotyped image of Black people and further contributes to the dehumanisation of Black people. Black-led organisations have launched debates to protest against this figure which exists in several countries in the EU and we think this is crucial to take this debate into the European Parliament.
