Estonian members of the European Parliament (MEPs) Urmas Paet and Kaja Kallase, as well as a number of other MEPs are going to nominate Boris Nemtsov for the Andrei Sakharov Prize posthumously.

Proponents of the idea also include Hans van Baalen, Petras Austreviciuse and Norica Nicolai, Paet told the Estonian media on July 12.

"The award will go to the Boris Nemtsov Foundation set up by his daughter, which aims to support Russian civil society in the fight for a peaceful and democratic state," Paet said.

"By giving this award we can demonstrate that we are not forgetting Nemtsov's legacy and can help the small civil society there," he said.

The European Parliament has been awarding the Sakharov Prize to prominent human rights activists since 1988.
