ALDE Party President Hans van Baalen MEP: "I full-heartedly congratulate President Elect Tsai Ing-wen and the Democratic Progressive Party of Taiwan (DPP) on their landslide election victory. Winning a large majority in both the presidential and the parliamentary elections marks a great step in the process of strengthening Taiwan's democracy. The European Liberals and Democrats are united in their opinion that the Taiwanese people should decide on their own future.

President Elect Tsai has made clear that she will be constructive and therefore will continue the policy of status-quo. The choice of Taiwan's citizens should be fully respected by the People's Republic of China and the international community."
