Liberal International, Friday 27 November 2015:

'Let's go forward together', LI President of Honour tells liberals

On Saturday 21st November at the ALDE Congress in Budapest, LI President of Honour Hans van Baalen MEP, was elected President of the ALDE Party (LI cooperating organisation), taking 70% of the votes cast.

The President of Honour, who is the delegation leader of VVD (LI full member) in the European Parliament, succeeded Sir Graham Watson, who stepped down to concentrate on the "Keep Britain In" campaign. In a statement for Liberal International, Mr. Van Baalen said: “As Past President of Liberal International, I have the experience to unite Liberals on a global scale. Now I want to do the same in Europe.”

“We must win elections in the EU member states. This cannot be done from Brussels. ‘All politics is local’ to quote US Congressman Tip O´Neill’ and the ALDE Party must pool the experience of its member parties on campaigning, financing, sponsoring, organisation, recruitment, government and policy making”, added the newly elected ALDE Party president.

Speaking about his vision for the ALDE Party, President of Honour Van Baalen said: “The ALDE Party is not the appendix of the ALDE Group in the European Parliament. However, the relations between Parliamentary Group and Party must be cordial and intense. I want to make the Leaders Meetings more content-based and a political marketing tool.”

“The Leaders of the member parties, European Commissioners, MPs and MEPs and Liberal grassroots and Liberals from over the world should unite at our congresses and council meetings. I have much respect for the Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel who, as the current President of the European Union, was present during the entire Budapest Congress”, said Van Baalen, thanking the delegates.

“My gratitude goes also to LI President Dr Juli Minoves Triquel and President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Anne Brasseur who actively participated in the ALDE Party Congress. Let's go forward together”, concluded Van Baalen.
