Merkel wil op de G8-top, die vandaag begonnen is, graag knopen doorhakken over het klimaat. Bush wil liever een nieuwe praatgroep onder leiding van de VS, waarschijnlijk om echte maatregelen te voorkomen. Die plannen vallen echter niet goed bij president Lula van Brazilië. Geen deelnemer op de G8-top, maar wel belangrijk voor het welslagen van maatregelen om het klimaatprobleem op te lossen.

Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, has flatly rejected President Bush’s proposals for parallel global negotiations to combat climate change, insisting that countries come to agreement at the United Nations, and not under US leadership. (Guardian)

Sarkozy (wel deelnemer) heeft het ook niet zo op de voorstellen van Bush.

“To preserve the planet, you have to show by example,” Sarkozy told a group of foreign journalists. “You cannot be the first and strongest in the world and say to the rest of the world on such a subject that, ‘We are not interested in this and we will use technology to solve the problem.’”

Bush’s latest initiative continued to focus on technology as a means to halt global warming. “It is not possible,” said Sarkozy. “It is not even in the interest of the United States. I don’t say this in an aggressive way, but because I believe it profoundly.” (International News)

De hele wereld is in de ban van de G8, maar het verleden leert dat er meestal weinig tot niets uit komt. De hulpbehoevenden in Afrika hebben immers al twee jaar G-w8.
