Water bottles flood EP´s entrance on May 10
"Dump the plastic bottles. Some actions just don't hold water. On the one hand, the European Parliament (EP) presents itself as a staunch advocate of resource efficiency and C02 reduction , while on the other hand it consumes over one million plastic water bottles a year", says Judith Merkies S&D MEP . This amount has been growing on an annual base since 2006. " The EP has to practice what it preaches. Resource efficiency is the credo of the year. Adjusting our own wasteful behaviour, by abolishing the plastic water bottles in all the meeting rooms, gives the EP´s policy and stance consistency", says Merkies.
Over 8000 bottles will block the plenary entrance at May 10
Merkies demonstrates her case by obstructing the passage to the plenary on the 10th of May with a garbage heap of over 8000 empty plastic bottles, the EP 'waste harvest of one day'.
Environmental and economic costs of EP water bottles
The production and transport of all water bottles used in the EP result in 160 tonnes CO2 emission each year. The economic costs of providing water bottles in each meeting room is substantial. On top of that, the bottles used in the EP create an enormous amount of plastic waste.

"Strenge EU wetgeving ziet toe op schoon drinkwater uit de kraan. Toch drinkt het EP nog steeds plastic flesjeswater. Tijd om de plastic flesjes te dumpen en milieuvriendelijker water te drinken. Er zijn goedkopere alternatieven die ook nog minder grondstoffen verbruiken" aldus Judith Merkies namens de PvdA in het Europees Parlement.
Judith Merkies houdt op 10 mei 2012 een actie tegen de bergen plastic afval van het EP Iedere dag worden in het EP meer dan 8100 gratis flesjes uitgedeeld. " Dit is niet in lijn met ´practice what you preach´. Het EP hield zich de afgelopen jaren met grondstoffenschaarste en resource efficiency bezig. Daar hoort ook milieuvriendelijker consumptie bij. De flesjes zorgen voor een enorme berg afval ", aldus Merkies.
Barricade van flesjes
Om deze verspilling zichtbaar te maken, zal van de dagelijkse afval´oogst´ een barricade van meer dan 8000 flesjes worden gebouwd op 10 mei, net voor de ingang naar de plenaire zaal van het EP.
Het aantal flesjes, dat het EP jaarlijks verbruikt in de diverse zaaltjes en vergaderruimtes ligt inmiddels op een miljoen per jaar. Het maken en vervoeren van deze flesjes kost vele liters olie (een kwart liter per flesje) en extra water, en resulteert in CO2 uitstoot van 160 ton per jaar. Het is in tijden van grondstofschaarste kristalhelder dat we naar een alternatief moeten zoeken.
