The EU recognises the most original and innovative regional projects - RegioStars Awards 2012.
An organisation’s work in boosting green technology jobs and a collaborative project to provide support for older people living in rural areas are among the 5 winners of this year’s RegioStars awards.
These are just some of the hundreds of thousands of projects that have benefited from EU regional development funds. The winners in each category are:
Eco World Styria, smart growth - the network increased the number of clean technology companies in Austria’s Styria region and is working to ensure this cluster of about 180 companies becomes a global center for eco-innovation. Since the beginning of the project, cleantech has generated 5 000 new jobs.
GRaBS, sustainable growth - 14 partners from eight EU countries are helping regional authorities adapt existing and new urban developments to withstand extreme weather conditions resulting from climate change.
Older people for Older people, inclusive growth - regional authorities in Finland, Greenland, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Sweden worked with the elderly to identify alternative ways of providing the support services they need in rural communities.
South East Malmö , developing deprived urban areas - the Swedish project created partnerships among residents, property owners and businesses in four districts of South East Malmö with high unemployment.
Podlaskie Voivodeship, informing the public - this Polish region developed a website in both Polish and English with detailed information on EU investments and programme beneficiaries.
The winners received their awards yesterday on the eve of the EU’s annual conference for representatives from local and regional government.
Regions submitted about 107 projects for this year’s awards. All projects have received support from the European regional development fund (ERDF) or the cohesion fund.
