D66 wil Boko Haram op Europese terreurlijst - Hoofdinhoud

D66-Kamerlid Sjoerd Sjoerdsma en D66-Europarlementariër Marietje Schaake willen dat de extreem gewelddadige terreurorganisatie Boko Haram op de Europese terreurlijst komt. Sjoerdsma: “Boko Haram is een terroristische organisatie die allang op de terreurlijst van de Europese Unie had moeten staan. Minister Timmermans moet hier aanstaande maandag tijdens de Europese Raad Buitenlandse Zaken bij zijn Europese collega’s voor pleiten. “ Door plaatsing op deze zwarte lijst wordt het mogelijk om banktegoeden van de organisatie en haar leden te bevriezen, kan het bankverkeer stilgelegd worden en kunnen reispapieren worden ingetrokken.

Ontvoering

De Verenigde Staten plaatsten Boko Haram al afgelopen november op de Amerikaanse terreurlijst, D66 ziet geen reden voor de EU om dit voorbeeld niet te volgen. Zeker nu de organisatie 230 schoolmeisjes heeft ontvoerd. Schaake: “Het lukt de Nigeriaanse regering maar niet om grip te krijgen op Boko Haram en het geweld gaat onverminderd door. Europa moet alle mogelijke middelen inzetten om de operaties van Boko Haram te frustreren. Daarnaast moeten we in EU verband hulp bieden in de zoektocht naar de ontvoerde meisjes en nadenken over hoe we deze spiraal van geweld kunnen stoppen.” Schaake nam in 2011 de verkiezingen in Nigeria waar als lid van een internationale delegatie. Schaake schreef onderstaande brief naar EU-buitenland-chef Catherine Ashton.

Recent developments of increased terrorist attacks in Nigeria are very worrying. The Nigerian government has been unable to combat the extremist islamist group Boko Haram effectively. Over the past years, the group has been responsible for a large number of violent and deadly terrorist attacks. Most recently, the group was responsible for kidnapping more than two hundred girls. Only this week, three Dutch citizens were kidnapped in the Niger delta.

Nigeria is amongst the largest economies in Africa and has the capabilities to be a leading country in the region. The EU should do all it can to end the operations of Boko Haram in Nigeria and improve the security situation. Therefore, Boko Haram should be placed on the EU list for terrorist organisations. This will make it more difficult for the group to raise funds and for those associated with it to travel. We also need to develop a clear strategy on how the EU can help stop the spiral of violence that has gripped Nigeria. Furthermore, the EU urgently needs to offer assistance in the search for the kidnapped girls. We must make clear that the EU is both willing and able to contribute to ending terrorism in Nigeria.
