How to coexist with wildlife in a rapidly changing world - Christiaan van der Hoeven (WWF) - Hoofdinhoud

At the tail end of 2024, around 70 participants from 30 different countries gathered in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, for the annual Animal Politics World Conference.

This years’s theme was ‘Human - Wildlife Conflict: let’s coexist peacefully!

Keynote speaker Christiaan van der Hoeven gave a lecture on 'How to coexist with wildlife in a rapidly changing world.'

Christiaan is a wildlife biologist working at WWF Netherlands as the coordinator for projects in the Zambezi landscape of Southern Africa. He studied ethology (animal behavior) at Utrecht University and completed a PhD in Wildlife Management at Wageningen University, based on his work in Cameroon.

Christiaan has extensive field experience, having lived and worked in West and Central Africa (Ivory Coast and Cameroon) on primates and elephants. After completing his PhD, Christiaan chose to focus on conservation rather than research. He spent six years at IUCN-NL managing a Small Grants program, supporting grassroots conservation NGOs in Southeast Asia, a role that broadened his impact across multiple regions.

With increasing human populations, shrinking wildlife habitats, and ac- celerating climate change, Human-Wildlife Conflicts are becoming more frequent and severe. During the lecture at our world conference, Christiaan explored the threats, trends, and potential solutions to these challenges, addressing how to meet the growing demands for food, water, space, and peace for both humans and wildlife.
